The Scam of Heartburn and Indigestion. We’ve All Been Fooled

Almost everything you have been told about heartburn and indigestion is a lie. Acid reflux and indigestion are not caused by excess acid in the stomach. Your doctors tell you that acid reflux is caused by excessive amounts of acid in your stomach, which is why they prescribe you acid-blocking drugs.

Heartburn medications are among the most frequently prescribed medicines in the US with sales exceeding $13.5 billion annually. Unfortunately, long-term use has been linked to nutritional deficiencies, bone fractures, an increased risk of bacterial infection. A recent report by the New York Times (NYT) explains how PPIs e block nutrient absorption, which as we all know leads to disease.
“Studies have shown long-term PPI use may reduce the absorption of important nutrients, vitamins and minerals, including magnesium, calcium and vitamin B12,” says the report. “Other research has found that people taking PPIs are at increased risk of developing pneumonia; one study even linked use of the drug to weight gain.”

However, you must know that there is no such thing as an excess acid in your stomach.

According to Jonathan Wright, MD of the Tahoma Clinic in Washington state, when stomach acid is measured in people suffering from heartburn and GERD it is almost always low, not high. In his book Why Stomach Acid is Good For You, Wright explains:

When we carefully test people over age forty who’re having heartburn, indigestion and gas, over 90 percent of the time we find inadequate acid production by the stomach.

In fact, a healthy human stomach contains one of the most powerful acids in existence: hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid (HCL) is the primary gastric acid secreted by your stomach. Its role in digestion and the regulation of pH in the stomach is essential for maintaining your health in a number of ways. So taking these acid-blocking drugs does more damage than good. Stomach acid plays an important role in the immune system by killing harmful bacteria and parasites that are ingested with food. Stomach acid is also necessary for the absorption of Vitamin B12 which plays a vital role in the proper functioning of the nervous system and the brain. Stomach acid activates pepsin, the enzyme needed for protein digestions.

What’s more, Wright and other clinicians have found that giving hydrochloric acid supplements to patients with heartburn and GERD often cures their problem:

In 24 years of nutritionally oriented practice, I’ve worked with thousands of individuals who’ve found the cause of their heartburn and indigestion to be low stomach acidity. In nearly all these folks, symptoms have been relieved and digestion improved when they’ve taken supplemental hydrochloric acid and pepsin capsules.

Thus, for most people, heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion are due to a lack of stomach acid (HCl), not too much. If you are not producing enough stomach acid, the food will churn longer and remain in the stomach for hours. When the food does not keep moving on through the GI tract, it sits in the stomach and ferments. This causes a level of discomfort that feels like reflux.

Heartburn and indigestion are normally a sign of having too little stomach acid. So one of the first things you’ll want to do  is to give your stomach the acid it needs.

  • So take one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mixed in a  glass of water. Your stomach pain should go away quickly.
  • One of the most basic food items you can take is Pink Himalayan salt. Not only will it provide you with the chloride your body needs to make hydrochloric acid, it also contains over 80 trace minerals your body needs to perform optimally.
  • Additionally,  make sure to consume enough good bacteria . This will help balance your bowel flora and will also aid in proper digestion and assimilation of your food.
